Negative SEO refers to the malicious practice of intentionally harming a competitor’s website search engine rankings. This is typically achieved through a variety of underhanded tactics that are against search engine guidelines, known as black hat SEO strategies. Some common methods include bombarding the website with low-quality or spammy inbound links, creating fake social media profiles to ruin a brand’s reputation, or even hacking into a site to modify its content. The goal is to damage the credibility and trustworthiness of the target site in the eyes of search engines, thereby diminishing its position in search results.
