Website migrations

Implement a new website without losing position in search results.

Whether you are switching the domain, upgrading the technology, changing the CMS engine, or simply refreshing the design of your website — planning the migration well in advance is a wise decision. When done correctly, migrating your website will allow you to maintain the developed positions in search results and keep your organic traffic. SEO ranking drops don't have to occur during migration. Not all changes to the website have a negative impact on SEO. Therefore, if you are planning to move your website and need to know which elements require special attention, contact us!

Plan a Safe Website Migration With the Support of SEO Specialists.

We will identify potential problems in the website migration process and fix them. This way, your website will retain its search engine rankings during the move.
Consultation With SEO Specialists
Before you start building a new website, expanding the functionality of the current one, or changing software, we'll examine the technical solutions proposed by the developers. Even a well-designed website can have problems with search visibility if the chosen technology does not support good SEO practices. During the consultation, we will point out where to implement the relevant SEO elements and present the best approach to the website structure. We will also determine the stage at which we will prepare for migration.
SEO Audit and Implementation of Changes
We will check the development version of a site and conduct a technical SEO audit. We will thoroughly analyze the code, check compliance with previous recommendations, and identify additional areas for optimization. This is also the last moment to make changes to the URL structure and website architecture. Then, we will prepare all the necessary elements for the migration. We will implement the changes and fix any errors — you don't have to do this yourself because we will do it as part of the contract.
Safe Implementation of the New Website
Before migrating the website, we analyze all elements, prepare a redirection map (ensuring that old addresses will properly transfer users to their new equivalents), and work out the final details. We implement everything according to plan, and only then do we carry out the actual migration. The SEO specialist is involved in the implementation process until the website goes live and monitors the progress after the new website has been released. After the migration, he will perform another test to make sure everything is working, and then he will monitor the statistics and catch any problems that may arise.
A company selling professional cleaning tools asked us to help them migrate their website and build visibility in the USA. Working on this project was challenging, but the client's willingness to cooperate made it a rewarding experience.

Different Types of Migration

The two most common types of migration are a change of hosting and complete migration, e.g., a move from a SaaS platform to another, customized technology, or a switch to an open-source solution.
Hosting migration can be dictated by factors such as speed, security, stability, or costs. When changing hosting, we transfer the website (sometimes e-mail) to a new server or to another hosting provider. It is a relatively safe and easy process. Still, unforeseen situations may occur. On the other hand, migrating an entire website is a significant change (of the website, its structure), and this is where SEO risks arise. These activities require much more involvement from the SEO specialist than in the case of a hosting switch.

How Long Does the Site Migration Process Take, and How Does It Affect SEO?

Migration is more than just switching between the old and new versions of a website. Although, in some cases, such a direct transition is possible, the proper transfer of a website while maintaining its position in search engines requires careful preparation.
For smaller modifications, such as hosting migration, the process is quick and has minimal impact on SEO. However, major changes, such as switching to a new platform or building a website from scratch, require careful planning and special attention. In such cases, it is worth involving an SEO specialist at the initial stage of designing changes. This approach will preserve your site's SEO value, preventing its visibility and traffic from taking a hit.

What is the risk of a failed migration?
keyboard_arrow_down
Depending on the technical details, the migration may have no effect on the SEO, generate small fluctuations, or lead to a decrease of 60-80% of the traffic. In drastic cases, traffic can drop to practically zero. For companies dependent on it, the latter two scenarios lead to a drop in sales, leads, and revenue.
Since migration is the final stage, should the SEO specialist be involved in the planning stage?
keyboard_arrow_down
Yes, they should. Still, that doesn't mean they will be working on the website throughout the entire development process. They will be needed during the planning stage, after the website has been developed (so they can perform an SEO audit, report errors, or implement corrections), and before the migration. It is this period of activity that is subject to billing.
Does changing the WordPress template affect the website's SEO?
keyboard_arrow_down
Changing the WordPress template to another one can generate declines, but it doesn't have to. As a rule, most templates are only responsible for the way information is displayed on the page, and such changes don't have to be risky. In practice, however, new templates may not display all the necessary information. They can also be poorly optimized or change the configuration of the website — and these issues can cause significant changes in your website's performance.
Does platform migration affect SEO?
keyboard_arrow_down
Yes, platform migration (e.g., switching from WordPress to Shopify or from Magento to PrestaShop) is the most important change in the context of SEO. It involves several factors, including a change in URL structure — if URLs are not redirected properly (301), organic traffic can be lost. Another factor is the change in content and metadata — new CMS systems can generate different meta tags or header structures, which will affect indexing. Page speed is also a concern. Some platforms may be slower than the previous ones, which affects SEO. In addition, if the new platform is less responsive, it can affect the ranking in mobile results. A well-planned migration with 301 redirects and an SEO audit minimizes these risks.
